What we're learning
Fifth graders are currently learning about matter. Because this is their first introduction to chemistry, we are focusing on the basic concepts such as what is matter and how we can measure it. Each student has received a packet that will serve as their notes for this unit. In this unit, fifth graders will learn:
- what matter is
- how to weigh matter using a pan balance and a triple-beam balance
- how to measure volume using water displacement
- properties of matter
- states of matter and the movement of molecules
- chemical changes
- physical changes
- what makes a mixture
- how to separate mixtures
- what makes a solution
- what atoms, elements, molecules, and compounds are
Recently, fifth graders have just finished their unit on space. As a part of that unit, we learned about constellations and the stories behind them. Students then put their knowledge to work and created their own constellations. Collaborating with their writing teacher, Mrs. Donachie, the students also wrote stories similar to those of the Greek gods who are constellations are named after today. I am very proud of the fifth graders work! They all created nice constellations with wonderful stories! Here are some work samples of a few students. All students' constellations are hung in the science lab, so feel free to stop in and take a look at them all.
